世界自然保护联盟》濒危物种红色名录极危物种。大鲵属除中国外，日本本州到岐阜西部、四国和九州的局部地区以及美国东部在纽约到密西西比一带均有分布。栖息于溪涧、池塘。大鲵于夜间觅食，以鱼类和甲壳类动物为食粮，通过头和身体知觉去侦测水压改变来捕食猎物。它体形扁长，四肢很短，前肢4指，后肢5趾，趾间有蹼，有一短而侧扁的尾巴。水中用鳃呼吸，水外用肺兼皮肤呼吸，皮肤只有黏膜，没有鳞片覆盖。</span></p><p><br/></p><link
